Format of watercolour workshops:
In general, Expressive Watercolour workshops focus on interpretation and the range of techniques, for example review of tone, light/shade and colour, composition, and subject matter including figures, water in the landscape and reflections. Paintings are generally completed in stages to take home from each session.
Whether you are a newcomer to the art or more advanced, these sessions are a refreshing approach to the fundamentals and subtleties of the water based medium.
Watercolour techniques, various washes, papers, brushes and pigments and approaches, subjects and ideas will be explored in the studio.
In some of the workshops there is the opportunity for ‘plein air’ work for demonstration outside in the streetscape for those who would like to take this on board.
- Numbers are limited to promote individual attention.
- Screen displays of both the subject image and the tutor’s painting during demonstration provide clear viewing and assist with instruction.
- Tea and coffee are included and materials are not generally included (except with the GOMA workshops). A suggested materials and equipment list is available on request.
a past short tutorial below:
The focus was on tone, and the second exercise in that class was a seascape.
Stage 1 below was completed in class commencing with the sky – a very pale wash of ultramarine into light red, the distant land in 1 sweep wet-in-wet. Then the sea, preserving white paper, creating deep tone in the waves wet in wet, aiming for true values, mood and movement – not tight realism. Stage 2: Maintain looseness and freedom, a focal point in the main wave form, the broken wave as white paper. Then deepen the shade under the edge of the unbroken part. Then enrich colour of the trees and foreground sand, a light wash of an aqua blue (windsor blue green) over the close ‘wet sand’ foreground’, invent mauve shadow flicking away from base of dead trees. Then leave it alone. Note NO GOUACHE in the sea! There is however a place for gouache in the watercolour repetiore depending various things.
